INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE

You are being invited to participate in an evaluation and research study about the experiences of newcomers working in the tourism and hospitality industry. The study is being conducted by Skills for Change and Diversity Institute and is funded by Toronto Metropolitan University’s Future Skills Centre. Consent will be collected through this google form. Before you agree to participate, please read this consent form so that you understand what you will be asked to do. Please ask any questions to make sure you understand what you will be doing for this study. This study is being conducted by Dr. Wendy Cukier, of the Diversity Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University. 

This study will look at the experiences of newcomer workers and their employers in the hospitality and tourism industry. The research will gather information on the experiences of newcomers working in the Hospitality and Tourism sector, in order to better understand  the challenges, opportunities, and job market trends. The goal of the study is to create  recommendations that will address challenges, barriers, and provide more skills training opportunities for newcomers and employers working  in the industry. We are looking for 30 employers to participate in this survey.

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

You must be over 16 years of age to participate in this study. You are also a representative of an organization in either: (a.) the accommodation, (b.) food service, or (c.) drinking establishments sectors with experience supervising or working with newcomers to Canada. You must have access to the internet to participate in this study.


WHAT YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DO 

If you agree to volunteer to participate in this study, you will be asked to fill out an online survey. The survey will ask you to fill out a few questions about the organization you work for, including their recruitment and retention practices, support they provide for newcomer employees, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their business as well as a few basic questions about yourself, such as the length of time you have worked in the industry and whether or not you are a newcomer. The surveys will take about 15 minutes to complete. After you finish the survey , you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview or focus group discussion at a later date.


POTENTIAL BENEFITS

The information obtained from this study will help  better understand the factors that help newcomers to succeed in the hospitality industry. It can also tell us what training or programs might help them as well. By participating, you are giving us some ideas on how we can help.  However, there is no guarantee that you will receive any direct benefit from participating in the study.

 

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL RISKS TO YOU

As with all research, there are some risks, but the risk is very low. You may experience some feelings of discomfort when you answer some questions related to your experiences with the work. You may skip any question that you wish. You can also exit the study at any time, simply by closing the survey. If you would like your data to be removed from the database, please contact research@skillsforchange.org and provide your email address. If you experience any feelings of discomfort, you can refer to the list of resources we have provided at the end of this form.

We strongly encourage you to complete these surveys in a private location on a personal device so other people cannot see what you fill out on the survey. Your data will be stored on secure servers. Once you submit, your responses are protected with passwords to protect your privacy. Your email address will only be used to contact you and will not be included with your survey responses.

You are free to skip any of these questions if you don’t feel comfortable responding to them. Your responses will not be linked to your demographic information in any way. Only members of the study research team will have access to the data. The results of the study will never talk specifically about one person. We will always talk about the results of a group of people so no one person can ever be identified. 


CONFIDENTIALITY

We will not know if you participate or do not participate in this study. The online survey is confidential and will not collect information that can identify you like your name or address. Although your Internet Protocol (IP) address can be tracked through the survey platform, the research team will not be collecting this information. Your IP address is only used to make sure there are no repeat submissions from the same person. Please note that we cannot guarantee privacy if you complete your survey in a public place, or on a public server. Your personal information and your responses will be kept private by the research team.


HOW YOUR INFORMATION WILL BE PROTECTED AND STORED 

The online survey is hosted through QualtricsXM, a company based in the United States. However, your data will be stored on Canadian servers and is protected through a strict privacy policy (https://www.qualtrics.com/privacy-statement/). 

To further protect your information, when the data is downloaded, it will be stored as password protected and encrypted on Toronto Metropolitan University’s Google Drive. This can only be accessed by the researchers at the Diversity Institute who are listed on this consent form. Future publications based on this study will not identify you because we will only talk about the findings as a group. Your individual answers will not be shared with anyone outside of the research team. Once the research is completed, the lead researcher will store the data for up to five years after the end of the project (project ending April 30, 2023). Your survey responses will be deleted from Qualtrics no later than 2 weeks after the end of each of the surveys. The anonymized data (with no personal or individual information of study participants) will be stored for up to 5 years. Following this period, the data stored on the Toronto Metropolitan University Google Drive will be destroyed using Eraser (an open-source software that destroys electronic data by overwriting the files multiple times). 


INCENTIVES FOR PARTICIPATION 

No incentives will be offered to participants for the completion of this survey. You will not be paid for taking part in this research activity.


YOUR RIGHTS AS A RESEARCH PARTICIPANT 

Participation in research is completely voluntary. You can withdraw your consent at any point up until 4 weeks from today’s date by contacting research@skillsforchange.org with your email address. If you choose to withdraw, the data collected up to that point is NOT included in the analysis.

If any question makes you uncomfortable, you can skip that question. You may stop participating at any time without being disadvantaged as a result. Your choice of whether or not to participate will not affect your future relations with the Toronto Metropolitan University, Diversity Institute, Skills for Change or any persons involved in the study,

Please note that by clicking the ‘submit survey’ button at the end of this research activity, you are agreeing to participate in this study. By agreeing, you are not giving up any of your legal rights as a research participant. 


HOW YOUR DATA WILL BE USED 

The combined data will be used by the Diversity Institute and Skills for Change to better understand the challenges, opportunities, and job market trends of newcomers working in the hospitality and tourism industry. This study will be published as reports on the Diversity Institute website on or after April 30, 2023 and may be published in academic journals, reports or conferences. The combined data will also be provided to Skills for Change who may publish reports. You can access the results on or after April 30, 2023 at:

Regardless of where the data is published, your personal information will be protected. All data will be presented in combined form and no identifying information will be published in any report or publication. Your data will be stored for 5 years after the completion of the project and may be used in future research as secondary data. 


This study has been reviewed and approved by Toronto Metropolitan University’s Research Ethics Board (REB 2022-426).
