780% INCREASE IN PEARSON PASSENGER ACTIVITY IN Q2

Perspective on airport issues was provided recently in the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) quarterly results. Passenger activity at Pearson increased by 8.3 million or 780% during the second quarter and by 12.5 million or 584% during the first six months of 2022, when compared to the same periods in 2021.

IMPROVED PASSENGER FLOW AT TORONTO PEARSON

How is Pearson managing the substantial increase in passenger activity? Deborah Flint, GTAA President and CEO recently shared operational improvements that included 82% of passengers clearing security in less than 15 minutes in the last week of July.

AIR CANADA REPORTS 77% REDUCTION IN CANCELLED FLIGHTS

Air Canada also recently released operational improvements that included a 77% reduction in the number of cancelled flights, a 48% reduction in hour-or-more flight delays, and improved baggage handling success at a rate of 98%, nearing pre-pandemic levels.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OFFERS TO EXTEND WORK PERMITS FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS

A measure that could help increase workforce availability is moving ahead.

The Government of Canada is implementing measures for former international students with expired or expiring post-graduation work permits, and for temporary resident to permanent resident pathway applicants, the opportunity to work in Canada for an additional 18 months by either extending their work permit or applying for a new one.

ACTIVETO DATA REVEALS AN INCREASE IN PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLING VOLUMES 

Pedestrian and cycling volumes increased when compared to 2019, revealed by recent data from the ActiveTO Midtown Complete Street Pilot, which saw the installation of cafés, bikeways and other streetscape improvements on Yonge Street, between Bloor Street and Davisville Avenue.
