JULY 2022 MARKET READINESS INDEX INDICATES STRONG DOMESTIC AND U.S. TRAVEL DEMAND
The most recent Market Readiness Index is now available in the Research & Insights Terminal, providing a summary of market signals and indicators assessing the readiness of visitor source markets for Toronto’s visitor economy.
The July 2022 Market Readiness Index indicates strong domestic and U.S. travel demand leading into peak travel season. International markets also continue to exhibit growth, but lag behind domestic & U.S. markets.

TORONTO NAMED ONE OF TIME’S WORLD'S GREATEST PLACES OF 2022
With much of the global population hitting the skies again, TIME released its 2022 list based on “nominations of places from an international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.”

NEVER HAVE I EVER…BEEN A PART OF A FOOD TRUCK ROAD TRIP!
From July 11th to 17th, 2022, a Never Have I Ever, TO Destination Toronto food truck hit the road to promote Toronto in Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston.
Scarborough-native, Chef Craig Wong, from Patois created and executed a 5-item menu inspired by different neighbourhoods in Toronto, highlighting the city’s incredibly diverse and tasty culinary scene.

TAKE THE TIAO AND ONTARIO MOTOR COACH ASSOCIATION SURVEY ON TOURISM DEBT REPAYMENT
In partnership with the Ontario Motor Coach Association, TIAO has created a survey on commercial debt, financing, and loan repayments to learn more about the economic state of tourism businesses in Ontario.
The survey was created in response to a worrying trend being demonstrated by some banks in relation to ongoing financing with tourism businesses who continue to suffer from reduced revenues and increasing costs.

ADDRESSING LABOUR SHORTAGE THROUGH IMMIGRATION
Premiers from across the country met in Victoria last week for the first in-person Council of the Federation meeting since the start of the pandemic.
In a statement last week, the Toronto Board of Trade urged the federal and provincial governments to prioritize increased economic immigration to respond to the critical and growing labour market shortages facing Toronto region employers.

TORONTO PEARSON AIRPORT LAUNCHES EDUCATION CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT PASSENGERS COMING THROUGH THE CITY’S AIRPORT
Toronto Pearson Airport has launched an education campaign that includes two infographics on how passengers and stakeholders can work together to improve wait times at the airport and to bring about a better understanding of the complexity of all the different players involved in the airport experience.
“A better trip through Pearson” walks passengers through Pearson airport, providing simple tips and tricks to help smooth passenger journeys along the way by equipping them with more information about what to expect.
“Solving for congestion at Pearson” walks through the steps airport partners and government stakeholders have taken to improve passenger flow through Pearson, and what’s next as the industry works collaboratively to improve the travel experience.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA RE-ESTABLISHES MANDATORY RANDOM TESTING FOR AIR TRAVELLERS; MOVES TESTING OFFSITE
Mandatory random testing resumed as of July 19, 2022, for travellers who qualify as fully vaccinated, arriving in Canada by air to the four major Canadian airports—Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Toronto.
All testing for air travellers, for both those who qualify as fully vaccinated and partially or unvaccinated people, will be completed outside of airports, either via an in-person appointment at select testing provider locations and pharmacies, or a virtual appointment for a self-swab test.

TORONTO CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS INITIATION OF PARTNERSHIP AND FUNDING AGREEMENTS FOR FIFA WORLD CUP 2026
On July 20th, Toronto City Council authorized the next steps to advance Toronto's efforts in hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is expected to create 3,300 jobs, book 292,000 visitor room nights, generating projected Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) revenues of $3.5 million and generating $307 million in GDP for Toronto. The City is also working to ensure significant positive economic impacts for Indigenous, Black and equity-deserving communities, including removing barriers to sport participation for youth.

SUMMERLICIOUS, RETURNS AUGUST 12 TO 28
Summerlicious 2022 will run from Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 28 with delicious prix fixe lunch and dinner menus at various price points at more than 200 local restaurants. Restaurants will start accepting reservations for the Prix Fixe Promotion on Thursday, July 28.
Reservations are strongly recommended and should be made directly with the participating dining establishments. Some participating restaurants do not offer a lunch prix fixe menu on Saturday or Sunday. A complete list of participating restaurants is available at www.toronto.ca/summerlicious.
